Rocks

We are at the sea. The Aegean stretched before us. There is a speck on the far horizon- the town of Halkidi, south of Thessaloniki where I hope to be living and working soon. These two ancient shores (the one I sit on, and Halkidi), separated by crystal blue water, call to me. One, the ancient call of my ancestors, and the other a fresh voice-full of the unknown and the promise of adventure. Unlike the beaches in many parts of the world, the Pelion area of Greece does not have white sand. Instead, they have crushed rocks, and stones worn smooth by the gentle currents and waves. Make no mistake, though, the beach still gets hot! Giant spires, and empty caves dot the coast line. The cold water does not lend itself to brightly colored fish; but, the rocks- oh, the rocks. Giant sentinels looking up through the water. Smooth. Silent. Offering places for fish and other sea life to make their homes. They watch me as I swim (without a snorkel!). They are harmless to me in this calm water. I know, however, they are dangerous when the waves pick up and the sky darkens. For now, though, I am part of their ancient world. A part of their memory. A part of the ancient Aegean.
